I left my hotel to walk two blocks to the deli. The hotel desk
clerk told me that the deli had fresh fruit. I was doing 42
(www.Do42.com) and was eating a very clean diet.
I had on my best coat or at least it was my fanciest coat. It was a
full length grey wool coat. It was lined with some type of fur. The
coat really looked elegant. When I left home headed for the airport
I quickly grabbed a cap that was laying around and stuffed it in
the coat pocket. As the wind chilled my ears I reached into the
pocket, pulled out the cap and put it on my head.
The cap was a bright orange skull cap. It was a one size fit all
and belonged to one of my boys. As I passed store windows I saw
my reflection in the glass. What stared back was an elegant coat
and a bright orange cap. You can imagine the look.
I then said to myself, "I need to stop into one of these stores to
see if I can buy another cap."
I then heard the voice of God speak, "Why?"
I began laughing.
It wasn't that the cap wasn't doing its job. My head and ears were
perfectly warm. It was looks not function that made me want to buy
another cap. It was pride. Pride is one of the things 42 helps to
fight.
In so many instances the stuff that we have is fine. It is doing
the job that it was designed to do but pride causes us to become
discontent, spend money that we have no need to spend and often
get into debt trying to acquire the stuff that makes us look
good in the eyes of others.
No one in Detroit knew me as I walked down that street. They didn't
care whether I had on an elegant coat with a bright orange hat or
not. It was all me and my inner perception, but that's usually
where the majority of our issues are when we really look at the
truth. When we really look in the mirror, we stare back.
It's the power of modern advertising and Madison Avenue that
convinces us that we need the latest new and improved stuff.
Trying to keep up with the Joneses can literally drive you mad.
I finished laughing at my vanity and spend the rest of my days in
Detroit wearing my bright orange cap in inner and outer comfort.
