This week I studied Job. Who knows the answer to the question. Why do bad things happen to good people? Can being good save us from bad?
I’ve read the book of Job several times over the years but this week I had a few chapters read to me. I am going to put some of it here and encourage you to read it out loud. Job 38 Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind and said: “Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me. “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements—surely you know! “Have you entered into the springs of the sea, or walked in the recesses of the deep? Have the gates of death been revealed to you, or have you seen the gates of deep darkness? Have you comprehended the expanse of the earth? Declare, if you know all this. “Have you entered the storehouses of the snow, or have you seen the storehouses of the hail, which I have reserved for the time of trouble, for the day of battle and war? What is the way to the place where the light is distributed, or where the east wind is scattered upon the earth? “Who has cleft a channel for the torrents of rain and a way for the thunderbolt, And the Lord said to Job: “Shall a faultfinder contend with the Almighty? He who argues with God, let him answer it.” Read all or Job, or start at Chapter 38 and read it out loud. I don’t have any of the answers but I know I WANT to see where the snow and hail is stored. I don’t want to be a faultfinder and I don’t want to contend with the Almighty. There is a reason we don’t know why bad things happen to good people, it’s because some of the knowledge is still reserved for God alone. In some way this takes the burden off all or us. So when something bad happens to someone and they question it we will not know the answers to that until we sit at Jesus’ feet in heaven. Then I wonder if I will remember all the questions I want to ask or if somewhere up there someone is making a list for me. |
