So a friend sent me this email about a fifth grade teacher in a Christian school who asked her kids to look at TV commercials and see if they could use them to communicate ideas about God; here are a few examples that I thought you'd enjoy:
God is like Bayer Aspirin-He works miracles God is like a Ford-He's got a better idea... God is like Coke-He's the real thing. God is like Hallmark cards-He cares enought to send His very best. God is like Tide-He gets the stains out others leave behind. God is like General Electric-brings good things to life. God is like Wal-Mart-He has everything. God is like Scotch tape-you can't see Him, but you know He's there. God is like Delta-He's ready when you are. God is like Allstate-You're in good hands with Him. God is like VO-5 Hairspray-He holds through all kinds of weather. God is like the U.S. Post Office-Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet or ice will keep Him from His appointed destination. God is like Chevrolet-the heartbeat of America God is like Bounty-He is the quicker picker upper...can handle the tough jobs... Yesterday we had the honor of celebrating Mass with Father George and Sister Carole. They, with another priest formed CEW 37 years ago. It was a wonderful Mass and dinner afterwards. Sister Carole was celebrating 50 years as a Dubuque Franciscan. There were many people there that had been with CEW at the beginning and it was wonderful to share this with them all.
CEW is a community of Christians that has grown so much in the 37 years since it was formed. There are CEW communities in seven different states and to know that our little North East Iowa Community is one of many blesses us all. Thank you all for sharing in this Christian Expierence with us! God bless! The Coming of the Holy Spirit
When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.” (Acts 2:1-13 ESV) Today we celebrate Pentecost Sunday. I love reading this account and putting myself in the shoes of those who lived it. One the Disiciples, what a wonderful gift that was given to them. How would I react? Jesus told them of many things before He left but...still...wow. Then the devout men from every nation. Think of going to a strange place and hearing a language you didn't understand and everyone is speaking it. When my brother was in Iowa City hospital there were two Spanish men there too and their familys were large. The waiting room was full of these people and my sister and I. I had Spanish in highschool but I still only understood a few words out of each sentance. I was confused. So imagine these mas as they walked down the street hearing someone preaching God's word in their language. I would want to grab them and hold them so I could listen to my own language. And still there were the doubters who thought the apostles were drunk and that is how they spoke in different languages...that part makes me smile. Most drunks have less clarity....that the doubters would choose that to blame it on...just makes me smile. Celebrate the Holy Spirit always in your life. May God bless you all this week! So the other night I was on facebook (big surprise) and I found a very pleasant suprise. A classmate of mine who was injured in Iraq, pretty severly, was on facebook. There were various comments welcoming him back and saying, "Glad to hear from you" and I also voiced my appreciation. So many people prayed for this soldiers safe and quick recovery, myself included, that it was a great relief just to see this simple showing of his online self. I thanked God for this little miracle and hope that you will thank Him for all the little things and for all the soldiers during this Memorial Day week
